About
LET’S GET STARTED! TELL US AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF...
I have previously coached adult and Masters aged powerlifting athletes at various competitive levels. I believe muscular strength is important not just for sport, but for healthy living across the lifespan!
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN MS RESEARCH?
We believe that our recent work in the motoneurons of healthy people can help understand more about problems that exist in the motoneurons of individuals living with MS. Our work may help identify treatment targets that help maintain or restore physical function.
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN MS RESEARCH?
That problems with the release of neurotransmitters from the brain may occur in MS. These neurotransmitters are important for the nerves controlling our muscles to work properly.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECT...
. he current project will investigate specific properties of motoneurons that help them to fire and hence, muscles to contract properly. We will then assess whether possible changes in these motoneuron properties in individuals with MS are associated with physical function.
WHY IS YOUR RESEARCH IMPORTANT AND HOW WILL IT INFLUENCE THE UNDERSTANDING AND TREATMENT OF MS?
Technological advancements allow us to non-invasively identify and record individual nerves controlling our muscles. By determining how these nerves behave during muscle contractions we can identify specific problems and help inform future treatment targets.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE LAB AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE?
We have a close, motivated team that gets to explore various aspects of how the brain and nervous system controls our muscles. Our work is hands on and we get to work directly with participants to answer these questions.
